DirectTrust Workgroups

One of the primary benefits of membership is the opportunity to impact the development of the Nation’s trust framework by participating in the DirectTrust Workgroups. We have provided below an overview of each of the workgroups. Please let us know if you are interested in engaging in one of the groups; we can provide you with the logistical details.

Certificate Policy and Practices Workgroup

Workgroup Chair: Don Jorgenson (Inpriva) and Jeff Hutchison (IdenTrust)


Schedule:   3rd Wednesday of the month at 2:00 pm ET


The main purpose of this workgroup has been to establish and maintain a Certificate Policy that will serve as a guide to Health Information Service Providers, HISPs, and their Certificate Authorities, CA, as they implement Direct exchange programs and services. The main objective of this workgroup is to address the anticipated needs for certificate policies and practices associated with the Ecosystem community.

Clinicians Steering Workgroup

Workgroup Chair(s): Dr. Steven Lane (Sutter Health) and Dr. Holly Miller (MedAllies)

Schedule: 4th Friday of the month at 10:00 am ET

This workgroup is committed to secure electronic, standards based, Direct interoperability across HIT systems to support healthcare providers, patients, and other healthcare related participants to achieve the triple aim of better care, improved population health and decreased healthcare costs, as well as ensure the safety of care.   In addition, this group is dedicated to enhancing both the usability of, and user satisfaction with, Direct interoperability.

The workgroup seeks to support Direct to facilitate clinical care and population health as patients’ transition across their medical neighborhoods inclusive of healthcare and community caregivers.  The workgroup will continue to consider additional use cases and initially will focus on the following priority areas:

  • Usability
  • Communication
  • Promotion and adoption of additional use cases
  • Payload and Content Issues

The group will also participate in a DirectTrust-sponsored, web-based outreach service providing answers to questions from the community at large with respect to all clinical aspects of Direct interoperability.

As part of the promotion and adoption of Direct Interoperability, the workgroup intends to continue to publish its work as part of the efforts to communicate to the larger healthcare community and related constituents.

Direct Directory Policy Workgroup

Workgroup Chairs: Bruce Schreiber (MedAllies) and Jim Fisher, PhD (MedAllies)

Schedule:  2nd Tuesday of the month at 2:00 pm ET

The Direct Directory Policy Workgroup focus is to discuss and develop policy related to the proliferation of directories used by Direct implementers across the country. The goal of this group is to reflect the principles of openness and transparency that have guided DirectTrust member’s activities and grounded DirectTrust policy heretofore.

DirectTexting Workgroup

Workgroup Chairs: Bruce Schreiber (MedAllies) and Vince Albanese (Haven Health)

Weekly Calls: Fridays at 2:00 pm ET

The purpose of this workgroup is to design a set of specifications for DirectTexting that is interoperable across the DirectTrust network, secure, auditable, and HIPAA compliant in all respects. This workgroup may develop one or more apps for mobile devices to support DirectTexting at a national scale.

FHIR Security and Trust Workgroup

Workgroup Chairs: Calvin Beebe, MD (Mayo Clinic) and Julie Maas (EMR Direct)

Schedule:  1st Monday of the month at 2:00 pm ET

This new Workgroup will concentrate on education and information as its first and primary charge.  The goal is to get ourselves on the same page, so to speak, and become fully informed about the technology, the status of FHIR as a standard, the work being done with the Argonaut Project, etc.  Eventually, the FHIR Security and Trust Workgroup may want to issue a set of recommendations and services that leverage the Security and Trust Framework of DirectTrust to the web services environment, so that it, too, could achieve scalable trust on a national basis.

Innovation Priorities Workgroup

Workgroup Chair(s):  Vince Albanese (Haven Health)

Schedule:   1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm ET

The mission of the Innovation Priorities Workgroup is to create new service lines and use cases that promote the use of the DirectTrust Standards.

Marketing and Membership Workgroup

Workgroup Chairs:  Kathryn Ayers Wickenhauser (DirectTrust) and Tina Feldmann (Kno2)

Schedule:  1st Monday of the Month, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm ET

The mission of the Marketing and Membership Workgroup is to develop internal and external messaging, support members in their marketing strategies and to promote membership participation and growth.

Patient and Consumer Participation in Direct Workgroup

Workgroup Chairs: Leslie Kelly Hall, LifeWIRE and Lisa Nelson, MaxMD

Schedule:  4th Monday of the month at 12:00 pm ET

The Patient and Consumer Participation in Direct workgroup is charged with encouraging and enabling Direct exchange between consumers/patients and healthcare professionals. The primary goal of this Workgroup is to ensure that the consumer/patient is an active member in health information exchange, shares decision making about their health, and is a co-producer of their health information.

Payer Workgroup

Workgroup Chair(s): Anupam Goel (United Healthcare) and Dan Kazazz (SES)

Schedule: 3rd Monday of the month, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm ET

The Payer workgroup will provide a safe place where healthcare insurers can safely meet to collaborate on technology for connecting to providers (and others).

Security and Trust Compliance Workgroup

Workgroup Chair(s): Luis Maas, MD, PhD (EMR Direct)

Bi-Monthly Calls: 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 2:00 pm ET

The DirectTrust Security and Trust Compliance workgroup’s primary mission is to create a program which can be used by HISPs to voluntarily apply, qualify, and thereby be able to attest, to having met or exceeded best practices for security and trust. The overall goal of is to help assure the stability and interoperability of Direct exchange implementations nationally, and to develop, promote, and as necessary enforce the best practices necessary to maintain security and trust within the Direct Community.
